KIT LENS CHALLENGE

We’ve all got one, that lens that came with your camera, possibly when you were just starting out, or maybe you’re starting out on your photography journey now, and you picked up a camera body and lens “kit” to get you going. In the Film and DSLR days, that usually meant an 18-55mm lens, and in the Mirrorless era, that usually means a 14-45mm. You know, something with a bit of a wide angle, and a bit of a zoom, nothing too extreme on either side of the coin, just something to get you going.

Me? I’ve got an 18-55mm Pentax DA lens that, I believe, came with the Pentax K10D that I bought back in the mid 2000’s. I use it every now and then, like when we go out to a family function, and I don’t want to lug all my gear with me, but just need something capable of capturing “snapshots”.

Well, on a day not too long ago, I wanted to challenge myself and go out and shoot both photo and video to prove not only to you, the viewers, but to myself, that a “cheap” 18-55mm kit lens can be a very capable tool if used the right way. I’m going to add that THE most important part of capturing good photos and videos is COMPOSITION. If your framing isn’t great, neither will your photos be, so pay really close attention to not only WHAT you’re capturing, but HOW you’re capturing it as well.

Without further ado, here’s the video I put together of my day out with my trusty 18-55mm “Kit Lens”.

Enjoy!
